SmartRent Resident App User Testing

As the lead designer for the SmartRent Resident App I was tasked with conducting all user testing to validate designs. One customer pain point that was highlighted through customer success tickets and app store reviews was our smart device controls.

User Testing Goal

The goal of this redesign and user test was to increase Task Success Rate and decrease Time on Task. Shorter task durations often signify a more efficient and user-friendly experience.

Currently the device controls require two taps and a screen change.

My hypothesis is that users would prefer a 1 tap experience and control all their devices from the dashboard screen.

Average time to complete was 8 seconds and had a Maze usability score of 91%.

New Desgin

The new design condensed the actions to one screen instead of two. I also wanted to clearly convey the action on the button that would happen when the user tapped. The text on the button would change depending on the device state.

I felt that this design would limit confusion and decrease the time to complete the task.

Test Conclusion

As we see from the results above the single tap designs cut the users time in half and specially New Design had the lowest mis-click rate and highest usability score.

This verified the hypothesis I had that by simplifying the device design we could improve usability.
